When it comes to learning Spanish, many learners get stuck chasing perfection. But here’s the truth: perfection is the enemy of progress.

Language exists so people can share ideas. If you can get your point across—even with mistakes—you’ve succeeded. Obsessing over perfect grammar often leads to freezing up in conversation. On the other hand, focusing on fluency keeps you in the flow and gets you understood.

Even native speakers “mess up” all the time—slang, half-sentences, grammar slips—but communication still happens.

Accuracy FOLLOWS Fluency

Research shows that fluency develops faster than accuracy. Once you’re comfortable speaking smoothly, your brain naturally starts noticing and fixing mistakes. Accuracy is like polishing a diamond—you shape and refine it after the stone is formed.

Picture this: you're traveling and need directions. Asking,  “Where is the bus station?”  gets the job done. Freezing up while trying to craft the perfect sentence— “Could you tell me where the bus station is?” —leaves you stuck. In  real life , speed and clarity matter more than textbook accuracy.

If you only train for accuracy, you might “know” the rules but fail to use them in the moment. That’s the trap many classroom learners fall into. Fluency first ensures you can apply what you’ve learned right away.
